A good day

I had a very good day today, although I had an Accountancy test.

Oh AND – the test was good. My tutor said I was coming along “brilliantly”. I used to HATE bank reconciliations but now I love them; they’re so easy. :)

Catastrophe!

Posted on Tuesday, December 7th, 2010 at 9:12pm.

I got sick of my four inch brown roots on my black hair, so I talked my mum into helping me dye my hair again.

After washing it off, I applied the conditioner and looked down into the bathtub and noticed that there were big and very black drops falling from my head. I held my hair up and looked into the mirror and went “AH!”: I had black streaks going from behind my ears and up to my eyes AND I managed to cover one and a half of my eyebrows.

I managed to wash MOST of it off by spraying the shower head directly into my face but that then resulted in me having two very big, black eyes because none of my makeup is waterproof. Thankfully, the makeup came off easily enough.

For the next few days, I will be walking around with a dark jawline and one and a half black eyebrows and a half brown eyebrow.
I’m going to look SO cool.

Big kids

Myke and I are such big kids.

I went out in Myke’s garden and noticed that the pond in his garden was frozen over. I went back in his house to inform him and ask him if we could smash it up. He was all “YEAH!!” and so, off we went.

This is what his pond looked like after we finished with it:

As the temperature outside was -1° Celsius at the time, our hands were pretty cold and, as we hadn’t put on gloves or coats, we were forced to go back inside.

After we had warmed a bit, we went back out for some more:

ZOMG, damaging pond water in this way is SO FUN!!

On being a barmaid

Posted on Tuesday, November 23rd, 2010 at 8:21pm.

I’ve always wanted to try out what being a barmaid is all about. You see barmaids on TV and in films and it looks like an easy job; sitting around, having the odd drink with and chatting to customers. Like normal work but with more fun.
My mum manages a bar for a Social Club, her mum ran a bar and my brother has worked for my mum before. So, for ages, I’ve wanted to try it out for myself.

On Friday evening, I got The Call: my mum said she was desperate and can’t get anyone to help her out; she has a function on Saturday and it’s just her in the bar. Please – pretty please – can I help her out?
I jumped at the chance.

It really wasn’t as much fun as I thought. You get pervy men, snobby women and The Jokers – people who think they’re being really funny but are actually just eejits.

Before I started, my mum explained to me which type of drinks go in which glasses and where the glasses are. My brother was there for a little bit too and showed me how to use the cash register properly.

And then it started. The most difficult part was remembering which drinks we DID sell, where each type of alcohol (and soft drinks) was where and which glass to use. I got my glasses right except one time – someone ended up with wine in a brandy glass, haha. It wasn’t until I put the glass down in front of the customer that I realised my mistake but they accepted it, so it was fine.

After my little stint as a barmaid, I’ve decided that I MUCH prefer being on the right side of the bar and that I don’t really want to ever be a barmaid for real.

(It’s a shame I didn’t get paid any money for doing this for my mum but at least I got a bottle of wine and a couple of free drinks. :D )

Children in Need 2010

Posted on Sunday, November 21st, 2010 at 5:52pm.

Children in Need^ is a huge annual fundraising event and most workplaces take part in this in one way or another. This year, my workplace did a “sweets and biscuits competition” and a “wear your pyjamas in work day”.

As Children in Need was Friday, I spent most of my Thursday evening with Myke, in the kitchen. Making banana and chocolate chip cookies. Yum!

I was very impressed with myself over these cookies; they actually came out looking like the thing they were supposed to be (unlike my omelette attempts – I would have more to show but it seems that I don’t really upload photographs of my culinary disasters very often! But there have also been wet-look cakes, burnt pasta bake and many others!). Also, they were really NOM. :D

Anyway, so they were my entry into the sweets and biscuit competition and to get them into work to enter into the competition, I had to carry them on the bus. Where I wore this:

Yes, I – Lirae – wore my pyjamas TO work. Not just IN work – TO WORK. In the morning, I had my shower, put clean pyjamas on, put my makeup on and left my house to ride the bus.

As I was waiting for the bus to arrive, I had people practically breaking their necks to look at me, I had people walk past laughing at me – even children – and when the bus arrived, the driver just looked at me and said Well, that’s different!
I could have wet myself laughing at one lady – it was just the expression on her face. The bus was passing a corner and this lady had stopped to cross. She noticed me and her eyes just opened wide in horror and her jaw even dropped a little.

When I had managed to get IN to work, the receptionist just looked at me on the doorstep and asked me if I had actually come to work dressed in my pyjamas. Proudly, I said Yep! and I had a little round of applause.

It was a great day and everyone laughed at me and told me how brave I was for getting on the bus with my pyjamas on and holding my teddy bear^. And my cookies got second place. :D And I think we raised around £100 in work, so woo!
