Crappy Dentist Experiences
I should be scared of the dentist; I'd have every right to be scared of them.
Teeth Removal
Shortly after I turned fourteen, I had braces forced onto me. Before they could be put on, I needed to have four "big teeth" and one "baby tooth" removed. Usually, this is very simple.
The dentist decided that I'd have to go in twice to get my teeth removed. The first time, I'd have two of my big teeth removed and the second time (a week later), I'd have the other two big teeth removed and the baby tooth.
The first time I went to have teeth removed? No problems.
The second time, however...
The baby tooth and one of the big teeth were removed all fine and dandy.
Then the dentist injected the other side of my mouth with the anesthetic and after a few seconds, started removing the last of the teeth I needed to have out. He didn't wait for the anesthetic to "kick in" and I let him know. He waited a few more seconds and tried again but still, I could feel it. So he injected me again, waited a few seconds, still painful.
My dentist must have gotten bored of waiting or something and then decided to pull the tooth out. Before the anesthetic had started working.
Having a tooth pulled without anesthetic bloody hurts.
Dentist Who Hasn't Got A Clue
My current dentist is an idiot. There's no other way to put it.
She kept saying that I don't brush my teeth when I brush my teeth at least twice a day and sometimes, I even brush my teeth three times a day. I've never had a cavity; if I didn't brush my teeth, I should have had loads of cavities. Also, all of my other dentists have said I have lovely teeth.
Then I went back to the dentist earlier this year, after I'd already been to her three times, and she asks me if I smoke. Aren't dentists supposed to know when a patient smokes, like, from the day they start smoking or something?
Oooh: An Abscess!
Just after the first year of my college course (this was in 2005) ended, I went to my dentist and she sent me to a hygenist (someone who scrapes teeth). I was cool with this since I still had glue from when I had braces, stuck to my teeth and making them feel all bumpy and gross.
While I was having my teeth scraped, the hygenist started talking to the dentist nurse about how hot she thought the lead singer from Green Day is. She cut the gum behind my bottom, front incisors.
Just before I started my second year of college, the area around my front, bottom teeth started hurting. At first it was just a little ache but after a couple of days, it became really bad.
After a few days of not being able to eat and a few sleepless nights (due to the amount of pain I was in), I made an emergency appointment at my dentist...I had to wait a day for my emergency appointment.
I went to my appointment the next day and I described the pain I was in as best as I could (even talking hurt at this point). My dentist made me have x-rays taken of my mouth.
She called me back into the room and said that she thought my pain was caused by my wisdom teeth.
She prescribed me some antidepressants and sent me off.
The first pill was fine, no problems. I even got almost an hour of sleep! The second pill had me crying constantly for about eight hours, until the pill had worn off. All I wanted to do at that point was put myself out of my misery.
Yup: thoughts of suicide due to antidepressants. Aren't they supposed to have the opposite effect?!
My mum immediately took me off the pills and took me to my doctor the next day. He said I actually had an abscess and wasn't exactly pleased that I'd been put on antidepressants; even if it had been just wisdom teeth pain, I shouldn't have been prescribed them.
He told me to go back to the dentist as soon as I could and get some antibiotics.
We requested another emergency appointment with the dentist as soon as I got home. Again, I had to wait until the next day before I could be seen.
I looked at my teeth the next day and I had pus oozing out of my mouth. At first I thought my gums were dropping off or something, heh.
Thanks to my oozing mouth, I finally got my antibiotics.
